Photography with Lars Kirkegaard
Lars Kirkegaard is one of Scandinavia's most experienced underwater photo/video teachers doing several talks and workshops every year and judging numerous photo contests. He has now teamed up with Kingfish Dive & Travel to offer a fantastic photo safari heading to the Deep South & St. Johns in the Red Sea.
About the photography trip
The trip is for people with special interest in photo- or videography and is aimed at anyone interested in seriously improving their underwater photography in an informal, friendly and non-competitive environment.
Lars will be on hand each day throughout the trip and there will be a team of Lars´ staff along on the trip. The level of knowledge is high, and the trip is aimed at anyone who wish to learn and dive at the same time. Should you only have a GoPro or an old video camera it does not matter - the team cares more about the person behind the camera!
The whole trip is based on "having good time" and to get the best pictures and our experience is, that being this many people together with the same purpose will make sure you do “just that”.

Deep South – perfect for both wideangle and macro enthusiasts
The photography trip explores the coral reefs in the southernmost part of Egypt – only 40 km from the border of Sudan. You will dive great reef formations with caves and swim throughs as well as some of the most healthy coral reefs in the Red Sea. Expect lots of fish & marine life, plenty of macro and also the possibility to encounter dolphins at Sataya and sharks at Elphinstone Reef.
Fantastic reef formations of Fury Shoals and St. Johns
We visit St. Johns Reef and Fury Shoals duing the week and you can expect to dive some of the finest coral reefs the Red Sea has to offer. Here you will find plenty of fish and marine life and the coral reefs form beautiful underwater landscapes with walls, large coral blocks, swim throughs and the famous St. Johns Caves.
Swim with Dolphins at Sataya Reef
This area har beautiful reefs well worth diving and is very famous to also encounter wild dolphins.
Dive with sharks on the vertical walls of Elphinstone Reef
The offshore reef Elphinstone is a world class divesite and hardly needs any further introduction. The vertical walls attracts many pelagics like big schools of tuna and barracuda, and this is your best chance of diving with larger sharks like hammerheads, silkies and grey reefs. And late September is high season to dive with curious Oceanic Whitetip sharks at Elphinstone.
The exact route can not be guaranteed and is dependent on weather and wind.
We hired the large and well-run liveaboard Samira for this photo trip.
Here you can experience some of the dive sites we will visit
Through underwater caves and close encounters with moray eels and sharks
Close to napoleon fish and big shoals
Nice atmosphere on the boat and diving with barracudas and turtles
More info on your photography trip
Below we put together some more details on what makes this trip very special.
How will the trip work
This is not a workshop, but a regular liveaboard trip with the overall theme: Photo, Video, Lighting & Editing. The boat will aim at anchoring up at places where it is easy to work with your camera and the main purpose of the Dive-Guide will be keeping an eye on you while you take pictures, rather than dragging you along on a long sightseeing.
During the week there will be review sessions where we evaluate pictures and talk over some of the questions that might pop up. This will give you a fantastic opportunity to improve your skills, learn to use your camera and have a great dive trip at the same time.
There will be several nationalities participating, so the review sessions will be held in English, but we can surely find small review sessions for only a couple of people – should there be a need for it.
Which camera do I need?
All are welcome and we do not care which camera system you have. So should you only have a GoPro or an old video camera it does not matter! The team cares more about the person behind the camera!
It is a good idea to bring a laptop as we will be doing a lot of editing at night. It is during this time you will get a lot of feedback and evaluation from both Lars and the other participating divers on the boat.
We will make sure there will be extra rinse tanks, as well as charging stations for your camera gear. But as we are on a boat, remember to have a good self-discipline about your equipment.
